Barney's family are very comfortably well off. His mother, Angela, is a healer, and his father, Brian, trains owls. They live on a rambling farm in Dorset. Barney has two older brothers (Brad and Bernard, 5 years and 3 years older) and one younger (Bamber, 3 years younger), and one older sister (Beatrice, 2 years older). It was a loud and slightly boisterous household to grow up in, with the boys all trying to outdo each other in laddishness. Competition is very much a part of family interaction, although always in a friendly, affectionate way. Barney inherited his father's hands-on approach and love of nature and as a boy would always try to heal sick animals he found in the woods, not usually with much success. He gets on well with all of his family, and is always slightly puzzled by people who don't. He tells himself it's because most people didn't grow up on a farm, so were too cramped together. He also has a sizeable extended family that he gets on well with, including Belle Bletchley and Lavender Brown (Dunstan family tree here). At school, he was never terribly academically gifted, doing much better at practical sides of magic where one can 'go with one's gut' than anything with too much theory. He will *try* and learn and managed to get mostly As at OWLs. His best subjects are CoMC and Herbology. He was good at Quidditch, however, playing keeper for Hufflepuff, and was Quidditch captain in his final year, reluctantly stepping into Cedric's tragically vacated shoes. He was very cut up about Cedric's death, as he had always looked up to his gifted friend, and it is something that still saddens him a great deal to this day. Though he knew other people that died in the war, none of them personally affected him so much. Barney has always been clueless about girls. He loves them, he thinks they're brilliant, and he will fiercely defend any of his female friends. But relationships? It took him till his seventh year to realise that any of the girls flirting with him might actually be serious. He started dating Padma Patil that year, although it never developed into anything heavy. Since then he has been pretty much constantly in relationships, mostly quite casual or short-lived as, although lots of girls love him, his constant enthusiasm can get wearing after a while. He is still friends with all of his exes. Usually, the girl makes the first move, and he has in fact only once been knocked back, by his old friend Lucy Montgomery. He realised how much he cared about her when she became depressed following her brother's death and he tried to get closer to comfort her but was pushed away. From this he assumed she was not interested and, although he has continued to carry something of a torch for her, has not really thought about it since. Barney was not really very involved in the war. If he had been at Hogwarts, he would certainly have participated in the Battle of Hogwarts (as his younger brother did), charging forward "in Cedric's memory," but instead he was back on his parent's farm, one of the many who were not at risk but wished they could do something more to help those who were. They listened to Potterwatch and did everything recommended (such as casting protective spells over muggle neighbours) but mostly sat it out feeling kind of useless. He still feels a bit guilty about it, actually. Since leaving Hogwarts, Barney has taken on the project of making his parents' farm actually produce something rather than just being a flying ground for the owls his father trains for a living. Results have been variable, but they are now eating some home-grown fruit and vegetables as well milk and eggs from their own cows and ducks, with some to spare for friends and neighbours. It might be a while before it becomes commercially viable, however. Personality: He's a friendly guy, loyal and trustworthy, if a little blind to his friends' faults and prone to not taking all the facts on board before making up his mind about things. He's a bit touchy about his posh accent, as he's been teased about it in the past. (He might just forget fair play if you push that particular button.) He talks too loudly and too much, but is always happy to shut up if one of his friends has anything to say, as he thinks most of whatever they say is infinitely more interesting. He loves sport and enjoys a good game of Swivenhodge as well as Quidditch. He's a bit dim, but very sweet and bouncy. * * * ((Disclaimer: No, I'm not Barney Dunstan.
